Public Hunting
The Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources continues development, maintenance and management of more than 768,000 acres of land for hunting. These areas are financed with funds derived from hunting licenses and federal excise taxes on firearms and ammunition. A hunting license, management area permit and management area license are required when hunting on management areas, except a Wildlife Heritage License is valid in lieu of a resident State Hunting and WMA License for small game hunting, excluding waterfowl. Five of these management areas are located in Alabama’s Black Belt: Barbour County, Demopolis, Lowndes, Oakmulgee and Scotch.
